About the Laser-Cut Frame Weaving Loom

A laser-cut frame loom for tapestry weaving: a notched frame in one piece, a rigid heddle with slots and eyes in turn to lift alternate threads, a shed stick, comb, stick shuttle and weaving needle, all cut flat with nothing to join. Your name engraved on the frame, at the warp spacing and size you choose, up to big wall hangings.

Printing it

Untested: we don’t have a laser cutter yet, so this hasn’t been cut on a real machine. Cut a small one first. 6 mm plywood keeps the frame stiff under a tight warp; the tools can be 3 mm. In the SVG, red hairlines are to cut and black fills to engrave. Sand the notches, heddle slots and eyes smooth so they don’t catch the yarn. Each heddle block is six layers: glue them in order (layer 1 at the end towards the bottom of the frame, where the notches are) round a scrap of the same sheet as a spacer for the frame’s side, and turn one stack over for the other side.

Ideas for using it

  • A first weaving kit, ready to wrap.
  • A big frame for wall hangings, cut on a large sheet.
  • A set of minis for a weaving workshop.

Questions

What does the rigid heddle do?

Thread the warp through its slots and eyes in turn. Lift it and the threads in the eyes rise; press it down and they drop: either way the yarn passes straight across, with no weaving over and under by hand.

What should I cut it from?

6 mm plywood for the frame, so it stays stiff under a tight warp; the tools can be 3 mm.

Can I sell what I make?

On Pro and Ultimate you can sell the prints you make, for example on Etsy or at craft fairs, for as long as your membership is active: if it ends, stop selling them. On Free and Maker, print it for yourself or give it as a gift. The PDF itself is never for sharing or selling.
