Quilting Templates

Quilting templates in a set of sizes: hexagons, 60° diamonds, triangles, squares, half-square triangles and clamshells, in inches or millimetres. 3D printed with the seam allowance added, with a window to fussy-cut through or solid with corner holes; or printed on paper as English paper piecing papers, or as card templates.

Customise it in your browser, then download a print-ready STL, or a multi-colour 3MF. No CAD skills needed.

About the Quilting Templates

Quilting templates in the sizes you use: hexagons, 60° diamonds, triangles, squares, half-square triangles and clamshells, in inches or millimetres. Print them in 3D with the seam allowance already added, either with a window the finished size to fussy-cut a motif through, or solid with a pencil hole at each corner of the sewing line. Or print on paper: English paper piecing papers at the finished size, fitted together edge to edge to cut quickly, or the templates themselves with the seam allowance and sewing line, to print on card.

What you download

An STL or 3MF for any slicer; or a PDF to print on paper or card and cut out.

Printing it

Templates print flat with no supports; a translucent or light filament lets you see the fabric through a solid one too. Draw round the outside for the cutting line; with a window, draw inside it too for the sewing line, or mark through the corner holes. Paper pieces: print at 100% (check a size with a ruler), cut along the shared lines, and baste the fabric round them. Paper templates: print on card at 100% and cut on the solid line; cut the middle out along the dashed sewing line for a window, or mark the corners through the dots.

Ideas for using it

  • A set of 3/4", 1" and 1 1/2" hexagon templates for a Grandmother’s Flower Garden.
  • 60° diamonds for six-pointed stars.
  • A sheet of hexagon papers to baste on the sofa.
  • Clamshells for a scalloped quilt border.

Questions

What size is a “1 inch hexagon”?

The length of one side of the finished shape, as English paper piecing sizes are measured. Squares and half-square triangles go by the finished square’s side, clamshells by their width.

Window or solid?

A window shows the fabric inside the finished shape, so you can centre a motif (fussy cutting); draw inside it for the sewing line. A solid template is sturdier; mark the sewing line’s corners through its holes.

Which seam allowance?

1/4 inch is usual for patchwork and English paper piecing; choose 3/8 inch for easier basting, or millimetres to match your machine.

How do I check the paper pieces printed right?

Print at 100% (not “fit to page”) and measure a side with a ruler before you cut.

Which printers and slicers does it work with?

Any FDM printer. The STL opens in every slicer; the 3MF keeps the colours as separate parts in Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer, PrusaSlicer and Cura. Pick your printer in the designer to check it fits the plate.

Can I sell what I make?

On Pro and Ultimate you can sell the prints you make, for example on Etsy or at craft fairs, for as long as your membership is active: if it ends, stop selling them. On Free and Maker, print it for yourself or give it as a gift. The STL and 3MF files themselves are never for sharing or selling.
