Star Map

The night sky as it was over a place at a moment: your wedding, a birth, the night you met. Every star you could see, worked out for the date, time and place, in a circle with a title, the place, the date and the coordinates. Navy and gold, light or black and white, to print and frame.

Customise it in your browser, then download a print-ready STL, or a multi-colour 3MF. No CAD skills needed.

Printing it

The sky is worked out for the date, time and place you give, looking straight up: north at the top, east on the left (as the sky is seen from below). Put the local time there: the time zone comes from the place you find (with summer time worked out), or choose "Set the hours myself". Star positions are from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue (Hoffleit & Warren), via NASA HEASARC; constellation lines and the drawn Milky Way from d3-celestial, © 2015 Olaf Frohn (BSD licence); the Milky Way photograph is ESO/S. Brunier (CC BY 4.0) and the star field NASA’s Deep Star Maps (NASA/GSFC SVS; Gaia DR2: ESA/Gaia/DPAC), each redrawn for the sky, with its credit printed small at the foot of the page. The Moon and planets move among the stars, so they aren’t shown. Download label makes a label for the back of the frame (on sticker paper), saying what the map shows and the credits. Print at 100% on matt photo paper.

Questions

Is it the real sky?

Yes: the stars are placed for the date, time and place you give, looking straight up, from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue. The Moon and planets move among the stars, so they aren’t shown.

What time zone does it use?

The local time where the place is, with summer time worked out, from the place you find. Or set the hours yourself.

How do I print it?

Print the PDF at 100% on matt photo paper and frame it. There’s a label to download for the back of the frame, saying what the map shows.

No 3D printer? Can you print it for me?

Yes. Buy it printed from our shop, with your names and colours from the designer, made to order in our UK studio.

Can I sell what I make?

On Pro and Ultimate you can sell the prints you make, for example on Etsy or at craft fairs. On Free and Maker, print it for yourself or give it as a gift. The STL and 3MF files themselves are never for sharing or selling.
